eQualitie is looking for an experienced UX Designer to join our team. We’re looking for a person who can help us design usable, accessible and trustworthy experiences in technically complex and often constrained environments. This is an interesting opportunity to shape the usability of tools that are often built technology-first; i.e. this is a chance to take exciting technologies and turn them into meaningful, solutions that people want to use.

Organization: eQualitie

Status: closed

Compensation: paid

Role: UX Design

eQualitie is looking for an experienced UX Designer to join our team.

What we need help with
We are looking for someone to address the critical issue in Internet Freedom technology – designing tools people want to use even when times are normal. Too often, people reach for critical connectivity tools only when it’s too late, when the network is down, shutdown, or the website is blocked. We want to embed resilient tooling into friendly services that people want to use, so that when they need us, they already have us.

Designing for decentralized systems introduces a unique set of challenges, including inconsistent connectivity, non-traditional data flows, privacy-sensitive interactions and diverse user contexts. Our main requirement for the new colleague is the ability to understand these constraints, translate them into clear user experiences, and iterate based on real-world usage.

To do this, we expect you to be able to self-start, driving the process from mapping user journeys, to iterative design and testing and rollout. You will be simplifying complex concepts such as peer-to-peer content sharing, decentralized system set up, ensuring the product remains accessible to non-technical users, and incorporating feedback. You would be the only designer on the team, but we work together, so you’re not alone.

Given the nature of our work, UX research can play a central role. You will work closely with developers, researchers and field teams in various parts of the world to gather insights from users operating in restrictive or low-connectivity environments, and translate those insights into actionable design improvements.

We are looking for a subset of these skills

Strong experience in UX design for web and/or mobile applications
Ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear and usable interfaces
Experience with user research methods, including remote or constrained-context research
Proficiency with design and prototyping tools (e.g. Figma or similar)
Experience working closely with developers in iterative product environments
Nice to have

Experience designing for privacy, security or peer-to-peer systems
Familiarity with decentralized technologies or offline-first design patterns
Experience contributing to open-source projects
Background in interaction design, information architecture or service design
Strong interest in digital rights, internet freedom and usability in high-risk contexts
Work schedule
eQualitie is global, so you will have to coordinate with your team to find a time that works for all of you. Otherwise, you do your work when you work.

How to apply
Please send your resume and a cover letter to hireme|at|equalitie|dot|org explaining how your experience and motivation match our needs. Include a portfolio of relevant work demonstrating your UX process and outcomes. If applicable, include links to projects involving complex systems, research-driven design or open-source contributions.

eQualitie welcomes applicants from all backgrounds. We are a remote-first company and offer flexible working arrangements. We are keen to hear from people who consider themselves under-represented in the software, technology or FLOSS communities.

How to Apply:

Alexandra <hireme@equalitie.org>

https://equalitie.org/ux-designer/

Read more on opensourcedesign.net →

Owncast is the free and open source live video streaming + chat server, allowing anybody to run their self-hosted live streams similar to the large big tech options.
The project has hit five years old, and it’s time to give our home page and documentation a facelift.
We’re looking to redesign our home landing page to improve how we explain the project to people, add a bit more levity to our image, and simply freshen things up.

Muchrooms is a new(ish) project, it is a Jabber/XMPP group chat implementation in Rust. It focuses on testing, moderation and privacy. I recently got a grant from NLnet to work on it.
The design work would consist in creating a logo (vectorised) for the project to use.
I am not much of a design person and I’m not sure what directions to set, feel free to ask more questions and propose ideas yourself.

Jabber/XMPP is a standard communication protocol. It features at its core federation and extensibility. It would be nice for this to be reflected in the work.

I have in mind either various islands of mushrooms linked together somehow.
Or, some variant of the XMPP logo overrun by mycelium.

I don’t want the logo to look too realistic visually (as in, close to a photograph).

Even though I do have a grand for working on the project, I regret not to have factored this in, and this is the little I can spare with nonexistent salary otherwise.

Orchard Core CMS admin UX revamp

We’re looking for a UX professional to renew the admin (dashboard) experience of the CMS Orchard Core, i.e. where the owners of a site edit content, manage users, change settings, etc. If you enjoy open-source, have worked with such projects before, and perhaps want to get your name on another one as a contributor, then this can be you! (Being a developer, even a frontend one, is NOT necessary, we’d write the code. But if you do code, then all the better.)

Organization: Orchard Core

Status: closed

Compensation: paid

Role: web design

We’re looking for a UX professional to renew the admin (dashboard) experience of the CMS Orchard Core, i.e. where the owners of a site edit content, manage users, change settings, etc. If you enjoy open-source, have worked with such projects before, and perhaps want to get your name on another one as a contributor, then this can be you! (Being a developer, even a frontend one, is NOT necessary, we’d write the code. But if you do code, then all the better.)

Orchard Core is an open-source, community-driven framework and CMS built on ASP.NET Core. It’s among the most active .NET open-source projects.

The admin looks something like this currently. We don’t think we want to rebuild it down to the last pixel, but rather, we’d need new foundations, better ways for the usual, common UI elements (like navigation, notifications, forms…), and guidelines on how to keep it consistent. The goal is for us to have a modern admin UX that’s functional, convenient, and unobtrusive, and something that ordinary contributors can extend by following patterns. We don’t want to have to awkwardly explain to newcomers that, well, this was built by developers for developers, don’t expect top UX on the admin, it’s rough not just around the edges.

About AutSPACEsWe are co-designing a citizen science platform with a community of autistic people. The platform will be used to gather qualitiative data about how autistic people are influence by sensory processing differences in their daily lives, with the end goal of collecting data which will inform positive changes to environments so they are more accesible and better suited to autistic people. Participatory research is core to the AutSPACEs approach, and people with lived experience of autism have been involved at every stage of the project in order to ensure that we create a citizen science platform which meets the needs and priorities of those for whom there is most at stake.

We are co-designing a citizen science platform with a community of autistic people.
Graphic Designer/Illustrator

In response to community feedback and to improve both accessibility and experience, the project seeks to commission a series of illustrations. The illustrations should help convey the purpose of the project and platform, make its main functionalities clear and provide a welcoming feeling.
These images must be clear and appeal to a diverse range of autistic people. It is important to consider accessibility requirements, and to harmonise with the existing design system.

The images will also be used in presentations about AutSPACEs, as well as in other communications, such as newsletters and Twitter posts. The candidate will deliver 5 designs and work closely with the AutSPACEs team to make sure their designs are integrated into the platform.

We are UK based and looking for an established freelancer who is already able to produce invoices (it is not a requirement to be UK based, but to be able to send invoices to UK based organisations).

If you’d like to apply please share:

A CV or your preferred way of demonstrating your experience

Tuttle is an open-source software project supported by the Prototype Fund. We develop a time and finance management tool tailored for the requirements of freelancers.
While the core functionality has been implemented as a Python library, reaching the target users requires building a desktop app that can be used by non-programmers. The project would benefit from experience in designing the user experience for entering and managing user data, managing settings, running functions, etc. Ideally the designer is also a frontend developer proficient in Python and/or Flutter, able to prototype the UI in running code. Plus points if you are also a freelancer and thereby part of the target audience for the app.

We are looking for a mid-level to senior person who is creative, kind–and passionate about press freedom and digital security! We warmly welcome applicants from underrepresented communities, cultures and backgrounds, such as people of color, TLGBQIA+ folks, single parents, people from working class backgrounds, and people with non-traditional educations.

About this role

As the designer working with a small software development team, you will be responsible for improving the user experience of SecureDrop, an open source whistleblower submission system used by more than 70 news organizations world-wide. You will help us to address challenges at the intersection of UX, accessibility, and security.

Imagine you’re blowing the whistle on government abuse. How do you get in touch with a news organization? How do you stay safe and anonymous?

Imagine you’re a journalist receiving a stash of documents. How do you protect yourself against malware? How do you protect your source while examining these documents?

You’ll work on interaction design, visual design, prototyping, user research - all in close collaboration with the development team. While SecureDrop will be your focus, you will also partner with our web development team on improving our websites, including freedom.press and our second flagship project, the US Press Freedom Tracker.

You have…

3+ years of experience in a designer role as part of a team, or comparable experience, including: helping to take a product feature from concept to delivery and use; breaking down design solutions into prioritized, shippable increments; building and sharing design prototypes at different levels of fidelity and interactivity

Comfort working as part of a fully distributed team

At least 4 hours time zone overlap with US Pacific Time or US Eastern Time working hours for real-time collaboration

Great to have…

One or more of the following is a plus:

Experience working on products dealing with related challenges, e.g.: apps focused on privacy or anonymity; product development in a security-sensitive context; products or services developed for journalists; messaging apps, especially ones that include security/privacy features; applications translated into multiple languages; resilient applications built for low connectivity or slow internet connections

Experience working on open source projects or in partnership with community contributors

Understanding of CSS (web development experience is not required)

Experience implementing accessibility standards and best practices

Familiarity with technologies that protect digital security, anonymity or privacy (e.g., 1Password, Tor Browser, Signal)

Familiarity with user research methodologies and light-weight user-testing tools (e.g., UserFeel.com, UserTesting.com)

Orientation towards lean UX practices, including in documentation of design guidelines and research findings

Are you unsure you have the expertise or experience we’re looking for? If you are excited about the work we do, we would love to talk to you! Please don’t hesitate to reach out for a quick, informal call to help you decide whether you’d like to apply for this role.

Working with us

The SecureDrop team is fully distributed. With the stated time zone overlap in mind, all candidates will be considered for remote work with occasional travel.

This is a full-time role at a competitive non-profit salary. If it is your preference, we are open to discussing part-time arrangements.

For US full-time employees: Our budgeted salary range for this position is $95,000 to $115,000 per year. FPF provides health, dental and vision insurance (via Aetna); 20 days of personal time off and 13 holidays; and a 401(k) program. FPF matches your 401(k) contributions dollar for dollar, up to 4 percent of your gross salary.

If you’d like to be a part of our team, please send a short cover letter and your resume (preferably with links to a portfolio or other samples of your work) to jobs+ux@freedom.press. Please apply by February 14, 2022. Our goal is to make a hiring decision by March.

The best companies in the world have the best internal applications which enable their employees to excel and be more productive.

Appsmith is the easiest way to build polished custom internal applications. Our product will enable developers to build, deploy and maintain custom software quickly and painlessly.
Above all, we value a growth mindset. As a team of learners, we read, talk to people and listen to feedback constantly. We love working with people who have strong opinions, weakly held. Self starters and ambitious people form the backbone of our team. Do you want to work on bigger projects? Are you comfortable setting large goals and then accomplishing them? It’s the little things that matter. Attention to detail shows that we empathize with our users, our colleagues and anyone else that we interact with. Are you a practical optimist? Our founding team strongly believes in a better future. We believe in playing our part to make that future a reality.

CORRECITV is a non-profit investigative journalism organisation from Germany. We develop various software solutions that support our investigations with the community. For this we need support in the areas of backend and frontend development as well as UX and design. If you enjoy working on civic tech projects and would like to help develop processes for the quality journalism of tomorrow in an international team, then apply with a short cover letter, your résumé and work samples (e.g. Gitlab / Github).

Organization: CORRECTIV - Various projects

Status: closed

Compensation: paid

Role: App design

CORRECITV is a non-profit investigative journalism organisation from Germany.
We develop various software solutions that support our investigations with the community. For this we need support in the areas of backend and frontend development as well as UX and design. If you enjoy working on civic tech projects and would like to help develop processes for the quality journalism of tomorrow in an international team, then apply with a short cover letter, your résumé and work samples (e.g. Gitlab / Github).

These are the three projects we are currently working on:

CROWDNEWSROOM

The CrowdNewsroom is a platform for journalists who want to do investigations together with their readers. CORRECTIV has carried out a wide range of complex investigations with the help of citizens via the platform. The crowd newsroom allows the secure sharing of data, documents and personal stories and their verification and evaluation by the editorial team.

Website: https://correctiv.org/crowdnewsroom-pro/

Backend: Django, Python 3.6
Frontend: react, vue.js

Github Frontend: https://github.com/correctiv/crowdnewsroom-frontend
Github backend: https://github.com/correctiv/crowdnewsroom-backend

BEABEE

With beabee we want to enable independent local newsrooms across Europe to successfully start and run community-centered and member-financed media organisations.

For this purpose, we develop open source technology that allows community editors to better understand their members and to involve them effectively in their work. Readers become active informants, members, supporters, volunteers or employees.

beabee is being developed in partnership between CORRECTIV, Bristol Cable and the Bureau of Investigative Journalism in the UK and Veronica from the Netherlands. The project is funded by the Ruhr Conference at the State Chancellery of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Website: https://beabee.io/

Backend: TypeScript, Node.js
Frontend: vue.js

Github: https://github.com/beabee-communityrm

NOFAKE

The NoFake project is about the automation of monitoring processes in order to identify false online information and about the support in the research to refute it.

CORRECTIV has been working in the field of fact checking and disinformation since 2017 and wants to integrate more volunteers into the fact checking process in a meaningful way. Together with the Ruhr University Bochum and the Technical University of Dortmund, CORRECTIV is therefore carrying out a project that aims to develop technical methods to support the fight against disinformation.

The project focus of CORRECTIV is “Recognizing and combating digital” disinformation campaigns “. To this end, we are building a community of committed citizens who are able to recognize disinformation and counteract it through fact checks. At the same time we train artificial intelligence during this process. The software we are building will support this process.

The project is still at the very beginning. It is important that it is technically closely interlinked with beabee and the Crowdnewsroom. Exact requirements will be worked out in the coming weeks.

https://correctiv.org/faktencheck/

How to Apply:

julia.hildebrand@correctiv.org

Read more on opensourcedesign.net →

November 2, 2021

The Tor Project, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization advancing human rights and freedoms by creating and deploying free and open source anonymity and privacy technologies, is seeking a Brand Designer to be a part of the User Experience Team.

As a Brand Designer, you will be responsible for the creative direction of The Tor Project’s identity wherever it is presented, ensuring our visual language is both compelling and cohesive across the organization.

Though small, the UX Team at the Tor Project is a “full stack” design team – encompassing the disciplines of graphic design, interface design, experience design, and ethical user research. Our mission is to promote the principles of human-centered design across the organization and the wider Tor community, improving our users’ experiences at each point along the way.

This is a full-time remote position. Salary is $75,000 USD/year.

Job Requirements

In this role, you will:

Establish a clear identity and brand voice, including the development of a multi-platform brand style guide to provide greater consistency going forward.

Lead the creative development of our annual Year End Campaign, alongside other major fundraising and awareness campaigns throughout the year.
- Support broader content marketing efforts on social media, email, the Tor Project blog, press releases and more.

Produce and manage the Tor Project’s documentation templates, including reports, presentations, workshop and training materials, and anything else required by the team.

Create high-fidelity web designs, particularly for the websites we operate that are less technical and more brand focussed (e.g. www.torproject.org).

Collaborate extensively with and receive design critiques from the User Experience, Communications, and Fundraising teams.

Additionally, you will occasionally be expected to provide ad hoc product design support for the UX Team, including the creation of high-fidelity user interface designs and helping to maintain our web and product design systems. However, you will not be expected to undertake complex User Experience and/or Information Architecture tasks, and support from a dedicated UX Designer will always be available.

Required experience:

Experience designing primarily for digital brands. Although we do some print material, our audience and brand is online.

Ability to produce original illustrations, iconography and a good understanding of typography (on that last point, we advocate for using Free and Open Source fonts wherever possible).

Excellent proficiency with vector design tools.

High level of organization in all aspects of the design process, from producing clean vectors, to the organization of your design files, and maintaining consistency with established style guides wherever possible.

Comfortable working remotely with a global team distributed across many timezones.

Sufficient proficiency in English to be able to accurately present and receive feedback on your work.

Preferred experience (not required):

Experience collaborating with other designers in Figma, our vector design tool of choice. However should you not have experience with Figma directly – don’t worry! It should be easy for anyone used to Adobe Illustrator, Inkscape, Sketch, Adobe XD or similar software to pick up.

A history of designing or advocating for the causes of free-software, open source technology, human-rights, privacy, censorship-circumvention or an interest in internet-freedom in general.
Familiarity with the challenges faced by our users who are subject to surveillance and censorship.
- Experience producing 3D graphics or short animations – although this is not neccessary for the role, and would simply be an added bonus.

How to Apply

To apply, submit a cover letter, your CV/resumé and a link to or copy of a portfolio featuring recent samples of your work. In your cover letter, please include the reason you want to work at the Tor Project and explain how your qualifications meet those required in the job description.
IMPORTANT: Please email application materials in PDF format (where applicable) to job-ux at torproject dot org with “Brand Designer” in the subject line.

Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) is looking to engage the services of an individual with expertise in developing integrations with QuickBooks, HOT’s accounting software. Currently, HOT is utilizing BambooHR, Gusto, and Papaya Global to track staff time each month, including hours worked, projects/donors billed to, leave time, etc. As each of these systems has an open API, we’d like an individual to develop integrations with each to QuickBooks. This will eliminate the need for our accounting team to pull and merge time tracking reports manually each month with each system.

Avogadro is a leading 3D molecular design and visualization tool, downloaded over 1 million times. As coders and scientists, we need help with icon design and UI / UX as we finish Avogadro 2.0
Our biggest need is for toolbar icons. Beyond the standard “New,” “Open,” “Save,” “Export,” etc. we’re a 3D modeling tool and chemistry set. We need to clearly illustrate in 32x32 or 64x64 icons:
Navigate (translate, rotate, spin) Draw (freeform molecular sketch) Template (insert molecule fragments) Select (e.g., rubber band rectangle) Manipulate (e.g., pull and push atoms and selections around) Bond / Angle Manipulate (e.g., tweak lengths and angles rather than move in 3D cartesian coordinates) Measure (e.g., click on atoms to measure distances, angles, etc.) Animate (e.g., show a molecular movie / dynamics) Align (e.g., set the molecule along the X / Y / Z axis) Auto Optimize (e.g., let the computer find a low energy geometry) Auto Rotate (e.g., spin the molecule for presentations) In short, we share some concepts with Blender and CAD programs, but have our own set of tools and needs. Some chemistry experience is probably helpful, but not required. We’ve used our programs with high school and college students and it should be intuitive and fun to use.

We want to strike a balance between “any student can use it” and “plenty of features for experts.” For example a computer graphics student contributed new “layer” features as part of Google Summer of Code and it was eye-opening. They could be used to simplify a lot of tasks – so now we’re wondering what else could improve our experience.

Simply Secure is looking to contract a visual designer who can bring their expertise in web design and crafting brand identities to a new educational website and resource repository launching in August 2021. The website helps lawmakers, advocates, and concerned citizens get the tech policy information they need.
The website is currently in development, with IA and UX design work underway.
Several identity guidelines are already in place, including mission, vision, values, and audience. We’re hoping to strike a balance between a tactile, educational feel and a professional and trustworthy polish.

The design process will be iterative, requiring close collaboration with the project team, including: weekly meetings, asynchronous updates, and willingness to be responsive to team direction and ideas.

About us:

We are a small US 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, founded in 2014 with the goal of making security tools easier to use. We believed – and still do – that security doesn’t have to be confusing to end users. We’ve contributed design to a variety of tools that enhance security, such as Tails to I2P to NoScript. We’ve held salons and a residency around designing for security. But we’ve done a lot more than usable security. Just in the last year, we’ve launched a decentralization pattern library; a report on trust and transparency in nonprofit funding; a campaign to save internet freedom tech; a community around human rights centered design; a series of videos about trust and responsibility in design; and much, much more.

About you:

You love and have demonstrated experience designing identity systems. You are really excited to tell the visual story of a tool that helps people.

You design expressive and accessible screens, logos, and illustrations, meant to be viewed on the web.

You have experience designing websites.

You like working independently, in collaboration with a fully remote team.

You are comfortable advocating for yourself and your work to make sure that you’re getting what you need from us.

Your meeting availability has sufficient overlap with our working hours of 9am to 5pm Eastern Standard Time. The project team is based on the East Coast of the US.

You use tools that facilitate easy, remote collaboration (we use Figma, Notion, and Miro, primarily).

Nice to have:

The qutebrowser project is a web browser for power users, focused on keyboard usage. Its inspired by the vim editor and similar to projects like Tridactyl, Vimperator or Vimium.
As part of the browser, there are various internal web pages, e.g. to view bookmarks or history. The design of those pages is fairly inconsistent and could be improved.
Additionally, it’s planned to switch toolkits for the project’s website qutebrowser.org (from Asciidoc to Sphinx), so a redesign or porting of the existing design to Sphinx is needed. Finally, its development blog (blog.qutebrowser.org) has yet another design which is not in-line with the website.

The qutebrowser project is a web browser for power users, focused on keyboard usage. Its inspired by the vim editor and similar to projects like Tridactyl, Vimperator or Vimium.
Due to its userbase, its UI design is rather minimalistic. However, some users feel like the default theme looks dated or ugly. I’d like to find out what can be done about that, while keeping the minimalism of its user interface.
Additionally, it might be interesting to explore what can be done UX-wise to make it more accessible to new users, while still keeping the focus on power users.

Sustian OSS is a community of practiioners and researchers working to create a world in which the software we all depend upon is suitably supported. We hold annual summits and amplify the work of those within the community through a regualr podcast: https://podcast.sustainoss.org/
This year we have been unable to host an annual event, and the format of these events is difficult to replicate virtually. But we would like to do something to mark another year of working on this problem and to celebrate the contributions made by the community.

We’re looking for a designer and an engineer to join our intimate studio.
If you’re familiar with our work, you know we design, build, and ship beautiful health software for companies of all sizes, like Apple, Johnson & Johnson, NIH (National Institutes of Health), and Walgreens, to micro startups. We are hyper-concerned about guiding people through tough decisions, and produce eyebrow-raising results.
Our idealized candidate can be described in this way:

Organization: Healthcare Design for Patients, Clinicians, and Policy

Status: closed

Compensation: paid

Role: Software design, healthcare, making information beautiful

We’re looking for a designer and an engineer to join our intimate studio.

If you’re familiar with our work, you know we design, build, and ship beautiful health software for companies of all sizes, like Apple, Johnson & Johnson, NIH (National Institutes of Health), and Walgreens, to micro startups. We are hyper-concerned about guiding people through tough decisions, and produce eyebrow-raising results.

Our idealized candidate can be described in this way:

First and foremost, you need to be exceptional:
loving to design and build software, making is in your DNA, solving crazy problems with 50 different crazy solutions. You need to have a proven track record of designing healthcare software that has shipped.

Second, you need to be a system thinker and serial do’er:
to see more than just the design and production tasks but the entire product ecosystem, to having a firm grasp of engineering principles and business practices. You will need to lead not just yourself but other studio’ites and clients. Your responsibilities include leading projects and, over time, learning how to manage the entire service to designing software that is destined to ship. You will not be a cog in a machine. Your ideas will directly shape the experiences you create. Ultimately, you will be your own business unit within the studio and grappling with the holy trinity: design, technology, and business.

Third, you have to really care about Design, your fellow staff, and Spaceship Earth:
being adrenalized about healthcare, business, writing, open source, innovation, craftsmanship, fun. You are given great freedom and responsibility for managing your own work program to mentoring staff to driving company goals. Taking pride in and feeling responsible for a high degree of personal ownership in your work is critical because thousands to millions of people will immediately interact with your finished designs. We are looking for a passionate, inspiring, design-obsessed apostle who can increase our IQs (as well as dramatically increase your own).

That’s the kind of person we want. If you have those three qualities, just about anything else is negotiable.

If you have any questions about the position, please email me.

You can apply below, or send me your resume, portfolio, and phone number so we can chat.

Looking forward,
